Hi all,

I'm pleased to report that our article describing the Grape V1 dataset to date was published by Earth System Science Data this morning: https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-15-1403-2023
It describes the process of data collection, gives instructions for data access and visualization, and shows a few examples of how the data can be useful for science.

If your Grape V1 node isn't online yet, don't worry - this is a living dataset, so future data will be incorporated and accessed in the same way. As we discussed at the HamSCI workshop, our goal is to keep a robust network going through Cycle 25, so keep those nodes active!

Please enjoy, share and make sure to cite in future work. Many thanks to all members of the Grape team, old and new, for your support of this project.

Congrats!
I received notice that the Grape 2 is available.  How can I purchase one?  Thanks, John

Hi John,

It’s actually the Grape v1.12. Instructions are here: https://hamsci.org/grape1

You can hear the talk about it here: https://youtu.be/T4ucFdEipiA?t=1953

Ron,

The files for Grape v1.12 are here:

The file Grape v1.12.zip near the bottom of the page has the updated schematic and other information.

I to am interested in the Grape 2. I do not have a node set up yet, so should I wait for grape 2 before proceeding?

This is great news!

I'm just sorry we weren't able to participate more -- we moved from our "way out in the country" observatory site, and now
occupy a different site much closer to civilization and HF is garbage where we are now.

The updated pcb is on the grape page on the HamSCI site now I believe.

Chuck - Grape 1.12 (you can build one now) vs. Grape 2 (still in development) is a question worth pondering.

The 1.12 is a single frequency receiver.  The Grape 2 will be able to receive multiple frequencies, so more ‘powerful’ but that comes with tradeoffs.

The 1.12 is freely available (assuming you can build, or learn to build, with surface mount components).

The Grape 2 is a more complex piece of hardware, more expensive, and it will not be a DIY build.  It is likely that only a limited number of Grape 2s will be produced in time for the next eclipse (Oct, 2023) and it is possible that we will have more requests for them than we will have units available.  In other words, there could be a waiting list (supply chain issues, sorry to say but that’s reality).

Building a Grape 1.12, getting it on the air, learning how to use fldigi, establishing an upload account on the PSWS Central Control Database, and, above all, contributing valuable data, should be quite satisfying.  And, you can start on that journey today!

It comes down to the old adage:  Is a Grape 1.12 in the hand worth more than a Grape 2 on the vine?

Also, a reminder of the Grape-specific forum here on Google Groups:  HamSCI-Grape ( https://groups.google.com/g/hamsci-grape )
