PRAIRIE VIEW – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team defeated the Prairie View A&M Panthers 5-0 on Friday at the PVAMU Soccer Complex for their second win of the season.
"I thought we played well in first half. We just couldn't finish our opportunities," UTRGV Head Coach
Mark Fostersaid. "I am so proud of how we came out in the second half. It was a well deserved clean sheet. The girls worked hard all week and I am glad they got one they deserved tonight."
After a scoreless first half, the Vaqueros (2-3-1) didn't waste much time in the second to get on the board. After a shot on goal, Prairie View A&M goalkeeper Medinat Lawal couldn't corral the ball as graduate student
Jeweleen Reuille was there for the rebound and put it in for her first goal of the season giving UTRGV the 1-0 lead.
Later in the second half, freshman
Rosie Train found herself one-on-one with Lawal but found freshman
Anna Hansson right in front of an empty net for her first-career goal and the 2-0 lead.
The Vaqueros continued to put the pressure on the Panthers (0-4) in the second half. After a header by sophomore
Savannah Frisby freshman
Linnea Eld headed home the rebound for her first-career goal giving UTRGV the 3-0 advantage.
Freshman
Libby Pole capped the scoring in the final seconds of the match as she took the pass from Hansson and recorded her first-career goal that made it 4-0.
Freshman
Anais van Doesburg, who made her first-career start, and graduate student
Ashton McCorry combined on the shutout. Van Doesburg finished with one save while McCorry recorded two saves.
The Vaqueros outshot the Panthers 12 to 5 and 8 to 3 on goal.
The Vaqueros will back in action on Sunday when they visit the University of North Texas at 1 p.m.
