PR Summary

Add support to detect IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK as a type of link so that the target is displayed when using Get-ChildItem. Also refactored the helper which used to have the more confusing but technically correct name IsNamedSurrogateReparsePoint() to IsReparsePointWithTarget() making it a bit more understandable.

Before

PR Context

Some users complain that dir shows a 0 byte size file when it clearly is not. Fix here doesn't include getting the real file size since this is not a symlink.

Will the PR fix #9970?

@SteveL-MSFT

@iSazonov this doens't fix #9970 but the change here could be used to fix that since we can detect this type of reparse point now

// In the case of OneDrive, they are not surrogates and would be safe to recurse into.
// This code is equivalent to the IsReparseTagNameSurrogate macro: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/ddi/content/ntifs/nf-ntifs-isreparsetagnamesurrogate
if (!handle.IsInvalid && (data.dwReserved0 & 0x20000000) == 0)
if (!handle.IsInvalid && (data.dwReserved0 & 0x20000000) == 0 && (data.dwReserved0 & IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK) != IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK)

Why have the two checks of dwReserved0 a different form?

The first half is the equivalent of the IsReparseTagNameSurrogate macro which explicitly covers the OneDrive scenario. The addition is specific to this new reparse point type.

Sorry, I meant why we do not use
data.dwReserved0 & IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK) == 0

The IO_REPARSE_TAGs aren't bitflags, so in the case of OneDrive, dwReserved0 has a value of 0x9000601A. We want this check to succeed so we don't try to access the file and end up downloading it, so the first half passes, the second half resolves to 0x8000001A which also passes (as IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK is 0x8000001B). If we change it to & IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK) == 0, then the second half fails as it's not zero so we end up downloading files from OneDrive.

Shouldn't this be just data.dwReserved0 != IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK without any bit masking, then?

The current comparison (data.dwReserved0 & IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK) != IO_REPARSE_TAG_APPEXECLINK will return false for e.g. IO_REPARSE_TAG_WCI_TOMBSTONE = 0xA000001F, or for 0x8000003B if Microsoft later starts using that for something. Because WinInternalGetLinkType does not treat those values as AppX reparse tags, I expect IsReparsePointWithTarget shouldn't either.

I'm not an expert on reparse tags, either.

Microsoft's sample code compares to IO_REPARSE_TAG_MOUNT_POINT = 0xA0000003 without bit masking. https://github.com/microsoft/Windows-driver-samples/blob/82bd522bb3b893e145d6d73f930edfc04977e4de/filesys/miniFilter/minispy/user/mspyLog.c#L70

The Reparse Point Tag Request instructions ask the driver developer to specify how the flags in the highest bits of the 32-bit reparse tag should be set. This seems to imply that the developer is not allowed to flip those flags on their own later. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/ifs/reparse-point-tag-request

Some information about the 0x10000000 bit and the IsReparseTagDirectory macro, which don't seem to be documented at docs.microsoft.com yet, was posted to the NTFSD list in September 2016. https://community.osr.com/discussion/comment/279158#Comment_279158

I reviewed all code I found. The tags is absolute values and I think a right way is to do simple comparison.

For reference https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/windows_protocols/ms-fscc/c8e77b37-3909-4fe6-a4ea-2b9d423b1ee4

It seems we use 0x20000000 as a trick to catch both IO_REPARSE_TAG_MOUNT_POINT and IO_REPARSE_TAG_SYMLINK

I'd use explicit values otherwise we can fall in tricky bug.

Checking the 0x20000000 flag (IsReparseTagNameSurrogate) can be OK, if you only care about the coarse meaning of the reparse tag and not about the format of the reparse data.

Have we in Windows a default APPX so that we could add a test?

@iSazonov let me add a test with some tracing to see if AzDO's has a default installed AppX that comes with Windows we can test against. Ignore next commit for now.

@SteveL-MSFT

@iSazonov as expected, the Windows image on AzDevOps doesn't have any Windows Apps installed. I added a test that will work locally on Windows if it finds an app installed.

* Have console host not enter command prompt mode when using `Read-Host -Prompt` (PowerShell#9743)

`Read-Host` calls into `$Host.UI.Prompt()`. However, this method is also used when the host prompts for mandatory parameters that aren't provided. The method expects to be called when given a `FieldDescription` and if the input starts with `!` it enters `CommandPromptMode`. In this mode, you can type `!?` to request help, for example. However this mode is not something you can use via `Read-Host` (only if calling `$Host.UI.Prompt()` directly passing in a well constructed `FieldDescription`). When using `Read-Host -Prompt`, the cmdlet creates a `FieldDescription` where the name is the prompt and the rest of the properties are empty.

The fix is that if `Label` is empty, we can assume it's being called from `Read-Host` rather than being called to prompt for a mandatory parameter and thus not enter `CommandPromptMode`.

* Add ability to pass `InitialSessionState` to the `ConsoleShell.Start` (PowerShell#9802)

* Use the original precision (prior-dotnet-core-3) for double/fload-to-string conversion (PowerShell#9893)

.NET Core changes to return "shortest roundtrippable string" by default for the ToString() method of double and float types. This results in ToString() for double/float values sometimes return a string in 17-digit/9-digit precision format. This PR updated the double/float-to-string conversion in PowerShell to continue using the old precision specifier before the change in .NET Core 3.0.

* Merged PR 9168: Disable Enter-PSHostProcess cmdlet when system in lock down mode

This is based on an issue, where Enter-PSHostProcess on a locked down (WDAC enforced) machine allows any admin to connect to any another local hosted PowerShell process and execute commands as that user. This amounts to privilege escalation on the policy locked down machine and something we want to prevent.

Fix is to check for system lock down and disable Enter-PSHostProcess cmdlet with an error message.

How come I don't see the expected behavior with PowerShell 7.1.2?

image

Did I miss something?

@KalleOlaviNiemitalo

@sba923, the same works fine for me in PowerShell 7.1.1 and 7.1.2. Perhaps you'd better file a new issue with your operating system version and the output of fsutil reparsepoint query C:\Users\steph\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsApps\wt.exe.

@KalleOlaviNiemitalo

Also, I'm not getting the colors that you have in your screen shot. Perhaps the component that adds those colors does not support displaying the targets of links.

Before I go on with opening a new issue: do you confirm that what I'm seeing is incorrect?

I'm seeing this on both 10.0.18363.1316 and 10.0.19042.804.

If the following command displays the target OK, then it proves that PowerShell successfully parses the app execution alias reparse point, and the target info is instead lost in output formatting.

Support for the appx execution aliases (AppExecLink) are gone in 7.2.0 and later. Worked fine in 7.1.x. I could not find any change log entry or discussion. Is that behaviour intentional?

@thorstenbutz the appx link target feature was apparently removed in #16044 because the AppX team did not want to document the reparse point data format and the PowerShell team did not want to depend on undocumented aspects.

The side effect of this change is that one can no longer determine the VersionInfo for the AppX reparse point's target see now-broken code in my
