Factors considered in the application process are household size and total household income. HOUSEHOLD SIZE is considered all persons related or unrelated, including parents, children, and grandparents, who live in your home and share living expenses. The TOTAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME is the income each household member received the previous month before taxes: this amount includes wages, social security, pension, unemployment, welfare, child support, alimony, and any other cash income.
In certain cases, foster children are eligible for free and reduced price meals regardless of total household income. If you have foster children living with you and want to apply for them, please contact us.
In certain cases, Medicaid participants may qualify for free or reduced meals. Students are not able to complete an application to qualify using their Medicaid number. Students who qualify with Medicaid are directly certified from the SC Department of Education. Students who receive Medicaid have to meet the income criteria to qualify. Our department will send out letters to all students who qualify.
The information you provide is entirely confidential. We do not share information provided without your permission and your student will not be singled out or identified as receiving free or reduced price benefits. All students have a unique PIN number and students are not identified as receiving free or reduced benefits.
Applications are available in English, Spanish and many other languages. If you need an application in another language, please contact our office at 803-802-1968.
