Developments in the New York City Labor Market
Private sector jobs in New York City rose by 19,200 over-the-year to 4,090,200 in February 2024. Gains occurred in private education and health services (+59,200), leisure and hospitality (+7,400), financial activities (+3,800), and other services (+600). Losses occurred in professional and business services (-16,100), information (-15,800), natural resources, mining, and construction (-9,800), trade, transportation, and utilities (-8,800), and manufacturing (-1,300).
The city's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.1 percent in February, down 0.1 of a percent from January and a decrease of 0.2 percent from February 2023. New York State's rate was 4.4 percent in February 2024. The share of the city's working age population (16+) who were either employed or looking for a job stood at 61.9 in February.
