Abstract

Exposure to ethnopolitical violence is a common and persistent problem globally, and exposure during childhood has been linked to increased negative outcomes, including aggressive and violent behavior. This chapter uses a social-cognitive ecological framework to summarize quantitative research on ethnopolitical violence exposure during childhood and adolescence and its association with aggressive behavior, including studies from various ethnopolitical conflicts around the globe, and consideration of factors at different levels of the social-ecological model (e.g., individual, family, and community). Developmental considerations are included to understand how the association between ethnopolitical violence and aggression may differ as a function of age or developmental stage. In addition, other relevant frameworks that have been used to study this problem are summarized. The current state of the literature, including limitations and directions for future work, is discussed.
