2023 "The Essence of Us: Chronicling the Black American Experience" Registration Form
The Council of Elders of the Black Community of Howard County (TCOE) is partnering with the Howard County Public School System (HCPSS) Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) to provide a Social Studies academy titled "The Essence of Us: Chronicling the Black American Experience."

This workshop series is designed to teach students about African American history and permit them to explore how history is written. Over the course of four workshops, students will learn about aspects of 20th century African American history while engaging with primary source materials, analyzing texts, formulating critiques, and imagining history from multiple perspectives. We hope participants will walk away with a transformed view of history and a new zeal to investigate their historical curiosities.

The sessions are for students in middle school and higher and will be held at 10:00-11:00 a.m. on the following 4 dates:
- Saturday, February 11, 2023
- Saturday, March 11, 2023
- Saturday, April 15, 2023
- Saturday, May 13, 2023

Sessions will be hybrid. For those desiring to attend in-person, sessions will be held in the media center at Oakland Mills Middle School. For those desiring to join online, Zoom details will be provided via email. We look forward to seeing everyone at the sessions and are excited to resume this African American history series.
