Harmony Program All Stars & Manhattan Youth Orchestras

The Harmony Program is recruiting beginner and intermediate string students, ages 9-15, for two Manhattan-based youth orchestras. All students welcome; participation in our after-school and in-school programs is not required.

  • Participation is free
  • Weekly rehearsals will take place from October to June
  • Students must commit to attending rehearsals and performances
  • Auditions are required and details are below (please read eligibility requirements carefully)

Manhattan Youth Orchestra – Auditions will take place in a single round and will be in person.

Students must be able to play the following:

  • G Major one octave scale
  • D Major one octave scale
  • A Major (violin, bass) or C Major (viola, cello) two octave scale
  • Two-minute piece/excerpt of their choice

All Stars Orchestra - Auditions will take place in two rounds, the first recorded and the second in person.

First round: students must submit a video of their playing the following:

  • G Major 2 octave scale
  • F Major one octave scale
  • C Major scale (one octave violin and bass, two octaves cello and viola)
  • B- flat Major scale (two octaves for violin, one octave viola, cello, bass)
  • a solo piece of the student's choice (2 -3 minutes in length, excerpt of a longer work is fine).

Second round: Selected students must be able to play:

  • G Major two octave scale
  • 2 orchestral excerpts sent to the student with their acceptance letter
  • A brief selection to sightread
