About The All-City High School Music Program

The All-City High School Music Program brings together top-tier New York City public school student-musicians from across all five boroughs to create high-quality music ensembles. These ensembles are collaborative and diverse, supporting students in achieving their highest potential in the study and performance of music. Made up of seven ensembles ranging from Latin Ensemble to Orchestra, to songwriting and modern band (Modern Music Project). The All-City High School Music Program provides a variety of options for students to express themselves under the direction of some of New York City’s most talented instructor-musicians and through deep partnerships with New York City’s premiere arts organizations.

Our Ensembles

* The All-City High School Chorus, having partnered with both the Metropolitan Opera Guild and the Master Voices, provides students the opportunity to perform alongside famous opera and Broadway stars in venues such as Carnegie Hall, New York City Center, David Geffen Hall (formerly Avery Fisher Hall) and even at the Verbier Music Festival in Switzerland.

* The All-City High School Concert Band regularly performs professional-level modern and established music from the concert band repertoire. In previous seasons, the concert band has collaborated with the New York Pops conductor, Steven Reineke, and has partnered with prominent artists and educators from Ithaca College School of Music, Crane School of Music at Potsdam, and Eastman School of Music. On numerous occasions, the Concert Band has opened for the Brooklyn Wind Symphony, having also performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and New York University’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.

* The All-City High School Jazz Ensemble, in partnership with Jazz at Lincoln Center, studies a wide range of jazz forms and styles. The jazz ensemble performs works by the masters of jazz, including Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and John Coltrane. After working side-by-side with clinicians from Jazz at Lincoln Center, students have had the opportunity to attend the Duke Ellington Competition.

*The All-City High School Latin Ensemble is dedicated to honoring the musical traditions of the New York City Palladium era, as well as the traditional and contemporary styles of several cultures across Latin America. This Ensemble is a thirty-five-piece big band that includes a full Latin percussion section and five vocalists. The percussion section includes drum set, congas, bongos, and timbales. Vocalists learn the “Soneo'' style of singing and work on “Coros” (background vocals). Some of the musical styles that the students are studying include the Cha-Cha-Cha, Bolero, Son Cubano, Rumba, Salsa, Guaguancó, and Merengue. Repertoire includes original arrangements from Tito Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Rodriguez, and The Machito Orchestra. The Latin Ensemble rehearses on Saturday afternoon, from 1:00-4:30 PM, allowing for participation from students in the All-City Concert Band, All-City Jazz Ensemble, All-City Orchestra, and the All-City Chorus.

* The All-City High School Marching Band brings together talented high school musicians from across the five boroughs who are dedicated to providing entertainment at parades, athletic events, and outdoor community events. The marching band has performed for the Yankees and at the Giants Championship Parades, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and numerous parades to celebrate national holidays, as well as the many cultures represented across New York City. Students learn repertoire ranging from traditional marches, made popular by military and community bands, to hit music from the 1970’s, 1980’s, 1990’s, and today. Recently, the All-City Marching Band made their debut on the Tonight Show, starring Jimmy Fallon. The Marching Band rehearses on Saturday afternoon, from 1:00-4:30 PM, allowing for participation from students in the All-City Concert Band, All-City Jazz Ensemble, All-City Orchestra, and the All-City Chorus.

* The All-City High School Orchestra performs professional-level music from all areas of the standard and not so standard orchestral repertoire. The orchestra has worked with cultural partners, such as Midori and Friends and the New York Philharmonic, and has performed in major New York City venues, such as Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and New York University's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.

* The All-City High School Modern Music project (MMP) is the newest addition to the All-City High School Music Program. Students who display a high level of interest and/or ability in songwriting, music production and contemporary music performance will have an opportunity to audition and participate in this new opportunity. The MMP experience will include guest visits by GRAMMY-winning songwriters, producers, engineers, and music industry executives.

The Modern Music Project writes, records, and performs original music and cover songs in contemporary genres like Pop, Hip-Hop, R&B, Rock, Alternative, and Country–while highlighting NYC’s central role in giving birth to many of these genres. The Modern Music Project is looking to work with singers, songwriters, rappers, DJs, beat-makers, composers, instrumental soloists, drummers, bassists, guitarists, keyboardists, and percussionists.
