To the members of the Ithaca community,
The Asian American Alliance of Ithaca College stands in solidarity with the victims of recent race- and ethnic-based hate crimes across the United States. The current COVID-19 pandemic has led to a rise in xenophobic anti-Chinese and anti-Asian sentiment. In August, the U.N. reported “more than 1,800 racist incidents” against Asian Americans in an 8-week period from March to May 2020. In September, there was a 1900 percent increase in anti-Asian hate crimes in New York City according to NYPD data. Many of these crimes involve physical violence against elders and other vulnerable people in our communities.
It is during times such as these we are reminded that the system of racism does not make exceptions for anyone, especially in the United States. The Asian American community cannot be complacent in systematic racism. We must remain vigilant and strong for our communities and for each other. Asian Americans must stand hand in hand not only with each other but other Black, Indigenous, and people of color. This is the time to advocate for Black and Asian solidarity. Do not engage in anti-Blackness or other forms of racism, no matter what race the perpetrators of these hate crimes are. We cannot attempt to find solutions to our problems in systems and institutions that have been built to oppress all BIPOC. It is in community vigilance and solidarity where we will find safety and liberation.
We would also ask our fellow Asian Americans to reflect on the history of anti-Asian violence. These recent events are not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of racism against the community. From the Chinese Exclusion Act to Vincent Chen to the current COVID-19 related acts of violence, anti-Asian sentiment has always been a part of United States history. We must break free from the model minority myth and reject political complacency to protect ourselves.
Finally, we encourage everyone to take care of yourselves and each other. We at AAA wish to provide an environment that will empower our members and community.
