Abstract
This chapter unpacks current sensibilities concerning Black masculinity, particularly within the context of historical, structural, and interpersonal violence and racialized trauma. Several studies have explored racial identity and Black men and boys, particularly looking at such issues as educational and health disparities, interpersonal and community violence, policing, and mass incarceration. Although clearly concerning the many aspects of the disparities, few allow for a full range of exploration concerning what some call “masculinities” (Connell, Masculinities. University of California Press, Berkeley, 1995), expanding into the complexity of the lived experience of African American men and boys.
