Overview

The 12-month PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Clinic in Florida provides comprehensive educational experiences centered on a challenging, quality-oriented practice, and learning environment. A diverse patient population coupled with dedicated faculty promotes teamwork while providing the optimal residency learning experience.

Program highlights

Pharmacy residents will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop knowledge, skills, and expertise in a wide range of therapeutic areas through direct patient care
  • Contribute to an interdisciplinary health care team offering patient-specific recommendations and drug information to optimize drug therapy outcomes
  • Enhance skills in conducting clinical research, medication use evaluations, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Strengthen communication skills by presenting formal and informal lectures, writing a professional manuscript for publication, and leading interdisciplinary discussions
  • Participate as an active member in cardiopulmonary resuscitations
  • Develop pharmacy practice management skills by participating in various committees, working with the management team, and serving as the chief resident
  • Network with fellow pharmacy residents and practicing clinicians through professional conferences

Program history

The PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency at Mayo Clinic in Florida is accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). Graduates of this residency have consistently found immediate employment in academia, hospital pharmacy practice, and ambulatory care clinics. Several graduates have moved on to complete a PGY-2 specialty residency. Approximately one-fourth of the program's graduates have accepted positions at the Jacksonville campus of Mayo Clinic.

The residency program is continuously evaluated for improvement opportunities to ensure graduates make a seamless transition into clinical practice. Four candidates a year are selected on a competitive basis.

Facilities

Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, is a comprehensive medical facility providing advanced programs in education and research that support the highest quality patient care. Campus activity is conducted in the Mayo Clinic Hospital; the interconnected Davis, Mayo, and Cannaday buildings; and the recently opened Mangurian building.

The ambulatory facilities provide clinical services ranging from primary to specialty care and advanced procedures. Mayo Clinic Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient services, including surgical and medical intensive care units, specialized solid organ transplant units, and advanced cardiac and neurosurgery facilities.
