After a long process of evolution which has rendered them perfectly adapted to the cold, the approximately 30,000 polar bears in the Arctic are now threatened with extinction due to global warming which is causing the melting of the sea ice and the destruction of their habitat.
Their white fur, which allows them to live in temperatures of -50°C, has served as a model for scientists to make tents and light outdoor clothing, suitable for extreme cold.

This researcher and one of her students, Wesley Viola, published the results of their work inspired by polar bear fur in the journal
