Right now, we are in a critical moment of escalation.
In September of this year UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is calling for a global Climate Ambition Summit in New York City where the “ticket to entry” will likely be tangible action to keep fossil fuels in the ground. On the national level, the UN summit comes at a pivotal moment for Biden who, despite making bold promises to end new oil and gas drilling and fight the climate crisis, continues to greenlight new mega-polluting oil & gas projects. The disastrous decision by the Biden administration to approve the Willow oil drilling project, new fracked gas and oil export terminals in Alaska and the Gulf coast, and opening up more public lands and waters to oil and gas drilling, are recent examples of his betrayal.
But the pressure to end fossil fuels is growing. Millions of people took action online to #StopWillow, an unprecedented level of public opposition to a fossil fuel project that the administration was not expecting. There is growing outrage over Biden’s climate hypocrisy, and global recognition that we need to take action to phase out fossil fuels to have any hope of a livable future. Under Biden’s watch, the U.S. remains the biggest oil and gas producer in the world – and the global community has had enough of Biden’s fossil fuel failures, too.
This year, we have a key opportunity to turn up public pressure on Biden to take bold action to end the era of fossil fuels – and stop the sacrifice of our communities and planet to the greed of Big Oil & Gas.
Starting this June and leading up to September, we will be taking action with national and international partners to make it clear that siding with Big Oil is a political liability for Biden – and we, the people who got him elected, won’t take anymore. We need to demonstrate our power by mobilizing together and taking creative action, and remind Biden that he has to listen to the people, not fossil fuel executives.
A key piece of this escalation arc will be distributed actions June 8 - 11th 2023. During this time local groups will be taking bold, creative, and disruptive actions to lift up their local fights against oil and gas developments.
To stop the worst effects of the climate crisis we have to stop new fossil fuel projects NOW, transition to just, clean energy systems, and bring justice to the communities most impacted by fossil fuels.
No matter where in the country you are, the fossil fuel industry touches all of us: join our national week of action to amplify your local fights with us. Our fight for climate justice is connected, and Biden is one target we have in common.
Note on Covid & accessibility: Please host your action outside or in a well ventilated venue. If indoors, we strongly suggest you have your participants wear durable masks to protect those most vulnerable amongst us.
