Call for Code Howard Hackathon 2021 Registration

The Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U), in partnership with IBM and Howard University, will host a virtual Hackathon from March 26 to April 1, 2021. This challenge provides participants with opportunities to showcase their coding expertise, expand their professional portfolios, and digitally connect with a cohort of students dedicated to addressing global challenges. Registered students will have the opportunity to have their ideas assessed by an esteemed panel of judges including Chelsea Clinton.

This year’s focus for undergraduate and graduate student designers from across academic disciplines is to develop unique digital prototypes and tools that help build more resilient communities impacted by climate change and tackle environmental injustices.

The event will commence at 7:00 pm ET Friday, March 26 when participants will receive the latest updates on IBM's Call for Code, hear welcome remarks, and virtually engage with one another. Students will then begin brainstorming their ideas with the help of CGI U, IBM, and Howard staff. By April 1, teams will submit their ideas to a panel of expert judges working in the fields of climate change, environmental justice, technology, and social innovation.

Why a Hackathon?
Hackathons are a great way to push the boundaries of what you know and learn what you don’t. Participating students will be connected to a group of dynamic peers who wish to build something concrete, sustainable, and thought-provoking. Our Hackathons support the entire process of creating solutions for those most in need.

Why virtual?
Due to the concerns and health safety risks associated with COVID-19, CGI U 2021 with Howard University is entirely virtual.

Why social impact?
We want students to build projects with meaningful impact and hope to foster a community dedicated to social change. We also want to facilitate the development and launch of innovative, life-changing open technology.

How will projects be judged?
The judges will select the winning platform based on the following criteria: addressing the prompt; design; creativity; and potential impact.

What can you expect at the event?
Hackathon participants can expect to connect with peers who are interested in utilizing technology for impact; network with staff from IBM. the Clinton Foundation, and Howard; and the top three teams will be awarded cash prizes.

Will I be connected to other accepted applicants before the event?
Yes, participating students will be able to connect with each other through a dedicated Slack channel in the lead-up to and during the event.
