One person was displaced Thursday morning after a fire sparked at an apartment complex in northwest Austin, the Austin Fire Department said.

The Austin Fire Department says crews responded just after 2:00 a.m. to a fire alarm at the Bluffstone Apartments located at 8701 Bluffstone Cove.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered the fire was coming from a unit's bedroom. Investigators determined the cause of the fire was a laptop being charged on the fire and caught fire. It was extinguished by a sprinkler but not before it still managed to do $8,000 worth in damage.

Fortunately, no one was injured, but the renter of the apartment unit is now displaced.

Fire officials want to take this opportunity to provide you with an important safety reminder to NOT charge phones or electronics on a combustible surface or material. The batteries in these devices can get extremely hot, especially when their venting systems may be suffocated or blocked, AFD said.
