OAS-ProFuturo: free online courses on Innovation and Mathematics for Teachers

Do you consider yourself to be an innovative teacher? Do you dare to try new pedagogical strategies and seek out unconventional methodologies to turn your classroom into an engaging, challenging, and motivating environment? To find out how you can expand on your innovative teaching toolbox, enroll now in our free, self-paced, online courses in Innovation and Mathematics, exclusively for teachers of the Americas.

These are self-paced, short online courses that require a time commitment ranging from 10 to 20 hours each. Upon enrollment, you will gain free access to the ProFuturo learning platform where you can access your course(s), which will include reading materials, as well as instructional videos. The Innovation Route and Jump Math courses provide synchronous sessions (available in English and Spanish), where you will have access to a dedicated specialized tutor and engage in peer-to-peer collaboration, which are proven to increase engagement and elevate your academic performance and content retention. Upon successfully completing all requirements for each individual course, you will receive a digital certificate of achievement from ProFuturo. 

The objective of this training route is to contribute to the development of Innovation as a fundamental competence that enables the personal and professional success of teachers and students, from the perspective of adapting, adopting, creating, and sharing. This training route is composed of 4 course levels: Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, and Professional, each of which offers an individual digital certificate of achievement upon completion. We strongly encourage you to start at the Basic Level as it sets the foundation for the subsequent modules.

Upon completion of this training route, you will have learned:

o     Digital literacy and use of basic digital tools to achieve innovative teaching practices.

o     Innovative leaning practices and classroom management using digital educational practices.

o     Educational frameworks that meet student’s needs for 21st century skills.

o     The teacher as the agent of change - the teacher as the facilitator, evaluator, resource designer and motivator.

o     How Apps and Blogs can change the way students learn.

First created by Canada's Mathematics Genius John Mighton, this course aims to enhance mathematics teachers’ skills by providing you with the necessary tools to improve your students' understanding and motivation. The study load is 20 hours spread across 10 Units, all to be completed online. 

Upon completion of this course, you will have learned:

o  How to present effective didactic sequences.

o  Make the learning process in the classroom dynamic.

o  Selecting suitable educational resources for students to better understand Mathematics.

o  Use real situations to help students develop critical thinking and understanding of the world around them. 

o  Discover the psychological and cognitive barriers to learning Mathematics.

o  Change students’ attitude by stimulating more interest in Mathematics.

o  Discover the 10 keys to Mathematics teaching.

Innovation Route: Primary and secondary school teachers from the Americas. 

Jump Math: Primary school teachers from the Americas. 

This professional development offer is made available exclusively to teachers who are citizens of the following countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Bolivia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and United States. 

Note: Argentina, Belize, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Jamaica, Mexico, Peru Saint Lucia, Uruguay and Venezuela have personalized training offers. Once registered, you will be granted access to the course of your choice and receive remote support from a virtual tutor. Tutoring will be available for 3 weeks for the Innovation Basic Route and 5 weeks for the Jump Math course following each course’s starting date. While these are self-paced courses, we offer the added value of synchronous sessions, available in English and Spanish for the duration of the Innovation Basic and Jump Math courses. These synchronous sessions allow participants to build upon their content knowledge by collaborating with peers from the entire region. Your virtual tutor will make a complete schedule of the synchronous sessions available closer to your starting date. 

STEP 1 - Submit registration form: 

Registration forms should be submitted by April 22, 2024. 

 

STEP 2 - Receive access to the online training Platform:

Before May 6, 2024, you will receive an email from ProFuturo Foundation with the credentials to access the training platform and courses. A follow-up email will be sent by your assigned tutor with further instructions to get you started. 

 

STEP 3 - Start the online course:

Starting on May 6, 2024, you will have 3 weeks to complete any course of the Innovation Route and 5 weeks to complete the Jump Math course. 

 

STEP 4 - Complete the course and download your certificate:   

To secure your certificate, you must complete the entire course and pass the online assessment with a minimum score of 80%. After completing your selected course, you may start another one and complete it at your own pace by December 31, 2024.

The Educational Portal of the Americas is an initiative of the OAS committed to generating access to quality education in the Americas and the Caribbean, through the use of information and communications technology (ICT).  The Portal was founded during the Third Summit of the Americas, held in Quebec City, Canada, in April 2001, as part of the “Connecting the Americas” initiative, which was adopted with the aim of “mobilizing and sharing human resources to strengthen capacities for leveraging information and communication technology for human development”.
