In 2022, 408 incumbents lost their re-election bids: 179 in general elections and 229 in primaries.[2] This was the first cycle since at least 2010 that primary defeats outnumbered those in general elections.

    Footnotes

    1. Incumbents may also be defeated in other nominating contests such as conventions. Ballotpedia counts an incumbent defeat in a convention as a primary election defeat and includes that defeat in any overall totals.
    2. The general election figure does not include five incumbents defeated in primaries who ran in the general election and lost again. These incumbents are recorded as primary defeats only.
    3. Rep. Thomas Peterson (R) was appointed following the resignation of Rep. Joel Ferry (R). Ferry's name remained on the general election ballot and Peterson ran as a write-in but lost to Ferry. Utah treats all write-in candidates as nonpartisan.
    4. Blair was serving as a full-time substitute for state Sen. Dan Johnson (R) at the time of the primary and was counted as an incumbent seeking re-election.
