Implications

  • The results of this study provide initial evidence that video can support increases in participation and communication for individuals with ASD in community settings 
  • Both participants demonstrated strong increases in: 
    • independent participation in community vocational activities
    • appropriate communication acts
  • Both participants indicated that they would like to continue to make use of the Video VSD application 
  • The employment supervisors for the two participants reported that: 
    • the video VSD resulted in increases in independent participation and communication
    • they would support continued use of the video VSD app

Future Research 

These are two cases within three large scale studies:

  • 72 participants estimated between 2020-2025
  • 24 adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID)--intervention delivered by RERC on AAC team (Study 1)
  • 24 adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)--intervention delivered by RERC on AAC team (Study 2)
  • 24 adults with ID or ASD--intervention delivered by family/caregivers and community professionals (Study 3)

Although many individuals with complex communication needs live in community settings, they often have only limited participation in activities of daily living (e.g., shopping), and they are less likely to be employed. A video visual scene display (VSD) approach provides support for both participation and communication for individuals with complex communication needs. The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (RERC on AAC) is investigating the impact of video VSD technology with adolescents and adults with ASD and IDD in a wide variety of employment, education, and community living activities. This presentation describes preliminary findings from this investigation, including changes in participation and communication for participants, and social validity data as reported by participants and key stakeholders.
