Discussion

Implications

  • The results of this study provide initial evidence that video can support increases in participation and communication for individuals with ASD in community settings 
  • Both participants demonstrated strong increases in: 
    • independent participation in community vocational activities
    • appropriate communication acts
  • Both participants indicated that they would like to continue to make use of the Video VSD application 
  • The employment supervisors for the two participants reported that: 
    • the video VSD resulted in increases in independent participation and communication
    • they would support continued use of the video VSD app

Future Research 

These are two cases within three large scale studies:

  • 72 participants estimated between 2020-2025
  • 24 adolescents and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID)--intervention delivered by RERC on AAC team (Study 1)
  • 24 adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)--intervention delivered by RERC on AAC team (Study 2)
  • 24 adults with ID or ASD--intervention delivered by family/caregivers and community professionals (Study 3)
