posted on behalf of Annie Benefiel, Governance Board Chair

Greetings, folks! The ArchivesSpace Governance Board held a community engagement session on Friday, May 27th. The idea for the session came to us following an exercise the board conducted from the It Takes a Village in Practice Toolkit. We saw that as ArchivesSpace Governance continues to evolve, it would be great to engage more directly with our members to generate ideas and gather feedback.

During the session, Laurie Arp provided an overview of the governance structure at ArchivesSpace, laying out the roles of the Board, the User Advisory Committee (UAC), the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), and their subcommittees. These groups, along with the fantastic folks at our organizational home LYRASIS, make decisions relating to the ArchivesSpace program and the continued development of the ArchivesSpace software. Following this overview, our most recent past-Chair Sean Quimby provided a brief update on what the board has been working on and discussing over the past year. These items include the usual budget oversight, the ArchivesSpace Diversity Partnership which is up and running with its first cohort, as well as ongoing discussions about board diversity and program sustainability. Other items on the board’s agenda included amending the bylaws, changes to ArchivesSpace’s training program, and considering new leadership at LYRASIS following the departure of CEO Robert Miller. The session wrapped up with a brief Q&A followed by breakout rooms for attendees to connect directly with their membership level representatives.

Board members were excited about the opportunity to connect with the community and are looking forward to doing it again next year. If you have feedback about the session or would like to see something particular on the agenda for a future session, please reach out to your membership level representative.

If you weren’t able to make it, the session recording, transcript, and presentation slides are provided for your convenience.
