THE DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY Faculty within the Department of Neurology are committed to tackling significant questions in the context of neurological, neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. These include (but are not limited to) state-of-the-art investigation into the genetics, biology and therapy of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia, Down syndrome (including early-onset Alzheimer’s disease caused by trisomy 21), autism, muscular dystrophies, virus-induced neuropathogenesis, Huntington’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Translation of basic-science research into therapeutics is facilitated by opportunities to initiate clinical trials at the adjacent UMass Memorial Medical Center. Translational research in the Department of Neurology is also fostered by close collaboration with basic science and clinical departments across UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Medical Center. Multiple opportunities exist for the successful candidate to interact closely with existing programs focused on understanding and treating neurological diseases, including the world class Horae Gene Therapy Center and the RNA Therapeutics Institute. We are an interactive group who encourages research at the interface of multiple disciplines, the development of enabling technologies, and team science. UMass Chan is a major force in both basic and clinical research. Areas of excellence include RNA biology, neurobiology, infectious disease, innate immunity, diabetes, metabolism, gene regulation and chromatin, gene therapy, and systems biology. UMass Chan offers outstanding resources and facilities, with 47 state-of-the-art research cores including Advanced MRI, Electron Microscopy, Large Scale AVV Manufacturing, Tissue Repository, Flow Cytometry, Transgenic animal modeling core, and Mass Spectrometry core facilities. UMass Chan has made substantial investments in research infrastructure. In the past two decades, three major new buildings dedicated to research have been completed: the Aaron Lazare Research Building, the Advanced Education and Clinical Practice Center for teaching as well as clinical and translation research, and the Albert Sherman Center. Two Biotech, a 75,000 square foot research facility in the Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park complements the physical infrastructure. In 2024, a new 350,000 sq. ft. Biomedical Research and Education Facility will open and house ~80 additional principal investigators, including Neurology faculty and the successful candidate in Alzheimer’s disease research. The University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School is in Worcester, the second largest city in New England. Worcester is among the top 13% most diverse US cities, providing an ethnically and culturally diverse environment with thriving art, music, dining and high-ranking academic institutions for primary, secondary and higher education.
