Faculty Position in Health Informatics and Implementation Science

The Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences (PQHS) at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Chan Medical School (UMass Chan) in Worcester, MA is recruiting a non-tenure track faculty member at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor. A joint appointment with a clinical department and/or VA will be considered. We welcome applications from established researchers as well as junior faculty. 

Successful candidates will have a doctoral degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) with a strong background in health informatics. Candidates will be considered from all related areas, including clinical, public health, translational, clinical research, and consumer health informatics. Candidates should have experience with one or more of the following: electronic medical records, SMART on FHIR apps, mHealth, big data analytics, natural language processing, machine learning or data science. Additional areas of focus may include clinical decision support, precision medicine, population health, and data visualization. The most competitive candidates will demonstrate a strong scholarly record of research, exhibited by high-impact peer-reviewed publications, external funding support, and a forward-looking, research agenda.

By strengthening or complementing the faculty research in the department, the ideal candidates will use creative, innovative approaches and technologies to address fundamental informatics challenges with broader societal impact and have the potential to leverage the strengths of UMass Memorial Healthcare and clinical networks. Excellent written and oral communication skills are also essential, with evidence of participation in national informatics research workgroups or initiatives. This position will require development of an independent research portfolio, with engagement in grant writing and publication activities. Additional experience in teaching, training, mentoring, and consultation is desirable.

The Division of Health Informatics and Implementation Science strives to improve population health through the development, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions that utilize technology-assisted approaches. Division faculty are experts in cutting-edge study designs and a variety of quantitative and qualitative methodologies and use these approaches to conduct innovative research. Faculty research focuses on how informatics applications, mobile applications, and EHR/PHR-delivered interventions (care-team facing and patient-facing, application of natural processing and machine learning methodology) can be employed to promote health and transform the experience and delivery of health care.

The Division of Health Informatics and Implementation Science is housed within the Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences (PQHS). PQHS was founded in June 2009 and currently has over 68 primary faculty members distributed across 4 Divisions: Health Informatics and Implementations Science; Biostatistics and Health Services Research; Epidemiology; and Preventive and Behavioral Medicine. PQHS also hosts a doctoral program in Clinical and Population Health Research, a Master of Science in Clinical Investigation degree program, and multiple NIH-funded training programs, including two programs in Implementation Science, and a methodology consulting and service unit, the Quantitative Methods Core. For 2020, the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research placed PQHS as third in the nation for NIH funding garnered by similar departments housed within US medical schools. We currently have more than $60 million in active NIH funding. UMass Chan is a collaborative and dynamic institution that has held a Clinical and Translation Science Award since 2010; the Medical School now garners over $290.9 million dollars in annual extramural funding.  PQHS is a key driver of clinical and translational research at UMass Chan. UMass Chan is the academic partner of UMass Memorial Health Care and Baystate Health, the largest health care providers in Central and Western Massachusetts. This position brings the opportunity to build partnerships our partner clinical systems and clinical departments within UMass Chan. In addition, this position includes an opportunity for a joint appointment at the Veterans Administration Center of Innovation in Health Services Research at the VA Bedford Healthcare System.
