We’re building community power to make freedom of movement a reality for all. We work at the intersection of disability justice, prison abolition, and immigration through cutting-edge legal strategies, vanguard community organizing, and policy advocacy. We specialize in deportation defense.

Immigrants in deportation proceedings have avenues to lawful status, and we're here to advocate for them. Pangea’s cutting-edge, free or low cost, immigration legal services have a nearly 100% success rate, often setting legal precedent.

Yazmin's Story

For many immigrants like Yazmin Elias, a client of Pangea Legal Services, California has failed them. The state has instituted a great number of policies to protect immigrants, yet everyday people like Yazmin fall through the cracks and end up in indefinite detention, at the hands of federal officials who have no interest in seeing them as human beings, capable of making mistakes, learning from them and becoming better people. Yazmin was convicted of 3 DUI’s, but was eventually, identified by a specialized DUI court as a victim of 20 years of domestic violence who deserved rehab and treatment, not incarceration. After completing 3-months of in-patient rehabilitation, and while enrolled in outpatient therapy, Yazmin was picked up by ICE after a court hearing in Sonoma County...

Marvin's Story

A few days after the elections, Marvin was detained by ICE in San Francisco. He was reporting as scheduled by an ICE program managed by a private contractor through which some asylum seekers have to wear a GPS device on their ankle.  ICE didn't tell him why he was being detained and he wasn't allowed to call his attorney...

We build immigrant and asylee community power for long-term systems change.

Our immigrant and asylee clients and their communities become member leaders in Pangea’s advocacy and organizing work because we believe that the people most impacted by injustice hold the key to their own liberation.

Since 2013, we have reached over 50,000 community members to:

  • Win over 3,000 complex legal cases that set legal precedent and catalyze narrative shifts for im/migrant justice.

  • Create the first 24/7 hotline for immigrants at risk of deportation, and support the creation of over 40 hotlines across the country.

  • Close three detention centers.

  • Pass legislation to end the use of private prisons in the state of California.

  • Pass legislation in three counties to end their collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

  • Co-found Project ANAR to train hundreds of volunteer attorneys who collectively filed more than 1,000 applications for Afghans in the wake of the 2021 humanitarian crisis. Pangea then supported project ANAR to become its own organization by and for Afghan people.

  • Co-found the Disability & Immigrant Justice Coalition, working in partnership with disability justice organizers and community leaders to create programs and advocate for the specific needs of disabled immigrant people.

  • Launch the Asylee Legal Empowerment Project, where we train asylees to represent themselves in court and win.

And much more.

We are a democratically managed nonprofit organization governed by our staff collective.

Everyone at Pangea makes the same salary. The staff share leadership and responsibility in directing the organization and establishing systems for operations, programs, and collective care. We do not have an executive director or a traditional hierarchy. Instead, every member of the staff has the opportunity to become a co-director after a candidacy period. The staff collective is organized into hubs, committees responsible for directing and managing the growth and administration of the organization.

We strive to embody the world we want to see with equity from the inside out.
