PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Bonny Slope Community,
In just a short amount of time, we will all be in Spring Break. Traditionally a week’s pause before the craziness of the end of the year sets in, this Spring Break just feels different. Here at school, we have been busily preparing for our hybrid students to return to the building. That means taping lanes in our hallways, moving furniture to accommodate social distances in the classrooms, creating new schedules to support all of our students towards success at the end of the year. All of our planning is now being realized, and although it’s a lot to do, we do it in celebration of finally seeing kids cross our thresholds again after a year.
We want to notify you of some points that are important for you to know:
· Some parents are calling asking about start and stop times starting on April 5th/April 8th:
o For Hybrid students: 9:00 AM-11:15 AM
o For CDL students: 12:15 PM-2:30 PM
· With the return of students on April 5th, our playground and track will be closed daily from 8:30 AM – 6:00 PM. Even though our hybrid kids leave at 11:15 AM, we need to keep our grounds closed for our after-school care Student Stop who will be using those spaces.
· Speaking of Student Stop, we are starting to get calls in our office to register kids for that program. Although housed at Bonny Slope, Student Stop takes care of its own registration and can answer any questions you may have about their program. Please contact them directly at 503-866-8330 or email at studentstopkids@aol.com
· We will be hosting another Principal Chat on April 2nd so that you can ask any questions prior to our April 5th (PreK-2) and April 8th (3-5) start. Our chat will be from 11:00-12:00, and it will be held on Zoom.
· Our well-received “Books for Bobcats” program will continue on March 31st, however, it will be changing the following week. Starting April 7th, only students who are in CDL can access these books. Why not hybrid? Hybrid students will be able to get books from their teacher directly.
· For our hybrid families, be on the look out for a video about arrival and dismissal and in school procedures.
Finally, here is a picture of Jim’s beloved pup Lilly Belle. She’s a two year old mini-Golden Doodle on a mission to protect our backyard from militant squirrels that constantly taunt her.
On a recent walk, she took a moment to spend time learning about this strange new thing she hadn’t ever seen before. She literally stopped to smell the flowers! Lilly Belle reminds us that this season offers so many wonderful opportunities for learning, reflection, and renewal.
During this Spring Break, we encourage you to be like Lilly Belle, put away your devices (you too parents!) and spend some time outside in this festival of color that spring provides for all of us. It’s there for you to explore and enjoy, if you only take the time to do so.

PSYCHOLOGIST'S CORNER
All of our students are about to experience some big changes. Whether they are going to remain in CDL or transition to Hybrid, students will see changes in their daily schedules and the group of students they are used to seeing on a daily basis. It’s a good idea to start talking about these changes now so that students are aware of what to expect. Ask them how they are feeling and what they need to make this transition easier. Thankfully, our classroom teachers will remain with their CDL and Hybrid students. We’re in this together and will be working hard to support our kids.
Our Hybrid students will experience an even bigger change with the return to the building. If you haven’t already watched the BSD video “A Day in the Life of an Elementary Hybrid Student,” I suggest you do! It is a great overview of some of the health and safety protocols with scenes that depict bus protocol, children at their desks wearing masks, and floor markers for social distancing. These are environmental changes that will be different from what students will remember from last year.
Our youngest students may have a hard time separating from loved ones. You can role play a Preschool or Kindergarten class using dolls or stuffed animals. Feel free to say an animal is feeling nervous and suggest ways to cope such as talking to a teacher about nervous feelings. Songs such as Daniel Tiger’s Grownups Come Back and books such as The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn and Llama Llama Misses Mama by Anna Dewdney can be especially helpful.
All of our students can benefit from regulation strategies to help them to calm their minds and bodies so they’re ready to learn. Here are a few easy ones students can practice anytime:
It’s perfectly alright to feel somewhat nervous AND excited at the same time. We are all enjoying a familiar routine at this stage, but I know I’m not alone in saying we are incredibly excited to welcome our Hybrid students back into the building and also thrilled that we get to continue to work with students who will remain in CDL.
Wishing you all a wonderful Spring Break and we’ll see you soon!

NUTRITION SERVICES
Dear BSD Families,
The start of In-Person Hybrid Instruction is right around the corner, and our Nutrition Services department has been hard at work developing a plan for how to continue to provide free meals for all children during both Hybrid and CDL. The USDA has provided waivers for the rest of the school year that allow any child (ages 1-18) to access free meals.
Starting April 5, meal service via bus routes will be discontinued.
If you attend Hybrid Elementary School:
● Hybrid students can receive a free daily meal bag to take home.
● Two days of meals will be sent home on Tuesday.
● No registration is required.
If your student will not be taking a meal home with them from school each day you can opt out here: Hybrid Meal Opt Out
If you attend CDL or are a non-enrolled community child:
● All CDL students and children not enrolled in the Beaverton School District can access a free 5-Day Meal Bag every Wednesday from 11am-12pm.
● Meal bags include 5 breakfasts, 5 lunches, and 5 supper snacks. Only children aged 4 and older are eligible for supper snacks.
● Families can select a school to pick up these meals in the Meal Bag Registration
Form.
● Registration is strongly encouraged.
● Children do not need to be present to pick-up meal bags.
● Masks are required to be worn by anyone picking up meal bags.

BSD Student Surveys
Student Survey
Each year the District surveys students, staff, and parents to gather information for planning, program evaluation, and assessment of progress on the District's Strategic Plan.
The student survey takes about 20 minutes during the regular school day. The data gathered from the survey are anonymous; your child will not put his/her name or other identifying information on the survey. Like other surveys, results will be presented only about groups. No individual data will be reported.
Your child may skip questions or stop filling out the survey at any time. Refusing to participate or withdrawing from the survey does not affect your child's grades or class standing in any way. If you or your child does not want to participate, your child can read or do some other activity while his or her classmates complete the survey.
A copy of the survey is available from your child's school and is posted at
https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/accountabiity/research-reports
After reviewing the survey, if you do not want your child to participate, please notify Bonny Slope Elementary: bslp-communications@beaverton.k12.or.us
