Back to School with PEU

Whether it’s your first semester or you’ve been around the block a few times already, this is a back-to-school checklist you don’t want to miss. We all know adulting can be tough - but you don’t have to do it alone. It doesn’t matter if you’re NYC born and bred or just moved here for school: you’re a New Yorker and we have your back.

PEU is here to help you save money, stay healthy, and thrive this school year and beyond.

The Affordable Connectivity Program stopped accepting new applications and enrollments on February 7, 2024. The last fully funded month of the program is April 2024. The other programs are still available.

✓ Affordable Internet

The Affordable Connectivity Program gives eligible New Yorkers up to $30 off their internet bill every month. Many New Yorkers qualify, including all households with a student at an NYC Public School. Go to bklynlib.org/home-internet for more information, including how to get one-on-one support with a Brooklyn Public Library Digital Navigator.

✓ Cheaper MetroCards

NYC’s Fair Fares program gives eligible New Yorkers half off their MetroCards. Learn more, check if you qualify, and apply at nyc.gov/fairfares.

Children in NYC Schools may also qualify for a MetroCard through their school. More information available here.

✓ Tenant Rights

PEU’s Tenant Support Unit helps NYC tenants who may be experiencing landlord harassment, are at risk of displacement, or need to make home-related repairs. Give them a call to learn more about your tenant rights by dialing 311 and asking for the “Tenant Helpline.” Learn more about them at nyc.gov/TSU.

✓ Health Insurance

PEU’s GetCoveredNYC program helps New Yorkers find a health coverage plan that works for them. GetCoveredNYC Specialists work one-on-one with you, for free and in your language, to help you get covered and learn how to use your health insurance plan. There are options available in New York for people of all ages, regardless of immigration or employment status (click here to learn more about health care options in NYC). GetCoveredNYC can help you find a plan that works. Learn more and contact GetCoveredNYC.
