Community Read 2021

Join us in reading and discussing Octavia Butler’s Kindred, a timely, provocative read when it was first published in 1979—and now, in the aftermath of the recent Black Lives Matter movement in our country, even more so.

Can a novel shed light on the relationship between the past and the present, the legacy of slavery in America, and the power of one individual’s story? And can this novel, and our conversations about it, inform our choices going forward?

Those are some of the questions we’ll pose in our Community Read in January and February. Please join us and add your voice to our discussion.

Kindred is available in both its original form and as a graphic novel by Daiman Duffy, created in 2017. Free copies of both versions are available through the Public Libraries of Saginaw. (See below for locations and hours.)”
