Editor's note: The Ministry of the Attorney General has confirmed that one count of assault causing bodily harm in the below matter was withdrawn on Nov. 2, 2016.

Peel Regional Police says one of its officers has been charged after a fight involving several people at a banquet hall in Brampton during a wedding reception last week.

Police say two men were assaulted early in the morning of April 10.

Acting Staff Sgt. Bill Ford said neither victim suffered serious injuries. Ford said Chief Jennifer Evans was made aware of the alleged assaults and ordered an investigation into the matter.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit was notified of the incident but chose not to invoke its mandate, Ford said.

Const. Jasjit Sandhu has been charged with one count of assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm in relation to the incident.

Sandhu, who has been with Peel Regional Police for 11 months, has been suspended with pay since the investigation began, as per the Police Services Act.

Sandhu is expected to appear in court in Brampton on May 18 at 9 a.m., police said.
