A former Vancouver Island Mountie who pleaded guilty to a child pornography charge has learned his fate.

Former Sidney/North Saanich RCMP officer Dale Lee Sheets was sentenced to six months behind bars Wednesday.

He was immediately taken into custody after the sentence was read.

Conditions of his sentence mean Sheets won't be allowed to access the internet, posess any pornography or be in the company of anyone under the age of 16 unless a parent is present.

Sheets pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography in a Colwood courtroom in October.

He also pleaded guilty to charges of unauthorized possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm other than where authorized, and was slapped with $200 in fines for the offences.

He was arrested in December 2013 and suspended by RCMP, leaving the force shortly after his arrest.
