GARLAND, Texas — A varsity athlete in North Texas is heading to “Curry Camp,” otherwise known as Stephen Curry’s Underrated Championship. Curry was a three-star prospect, and hosts the camp now to help current three-star high school basketball prospects get colleges and recruiters to believe in them. Gates is the first student from Garland ISD to be selected for Curry’s prestigious championship, which is taking place on April 1.

Carly Gates is a high school senior in North Texas who has good grades, plays three sports and is a leader at Garland ISD. She is about to go to Steph Curry’s basketball camp.

Spectrum News met Gates inside of a classroom for the law and criminal justice magnet program in Garland ISD. Gates stuck out, and was the hardest student to miss with bright, colorful hair and cool clothes. She is a senior at Lakeview Centennial High School.

“I was looking more into being a lawyer, or I could even be a police officer. I’m still trying to decide,” Gates said.

Gates is an admired student leader in the district. She serves on the Garland ISD’s Change Agent Committee that meets with the superintendent to talk about current affairs and policies. She is on the varsity team for three sports: basketball, soccer and track, but basketball is where she really shines. She is the 2022 All District Offensive Player of the Year. In a few weeks, she will work directly with Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors.

“I’m more than excited. I get to meet my favorite player! So I’m more than excited,” said Gates.

Curry hand-selected Gates for his basketball camp, the “Underrated Championship.” Curry Camp begins on April 1.

“We got selected from — it was the top 75. It was the best in the South Region in the top 75. Then they picked the top seven. Then those that were selected for the top seven, they represent this region,” Gates explained. “And I was selected.”

Gates gives a lot of credit to her coaches, who constantly push her to succeed in all three sports while making good grades in the magnet program.

“They always help me overcome adversity in every aspect of my life,” she said.

Girls’ Athletic Coordinator Terrenee Knight said Gates has beat every obstacle thrown in her path.

“You know, it’s a big deal for our district. She’s the first to ever be selected,” Knight said. “It’s a program that none of us had ever heard of until she actually was selected. So to see her represent our district well, do something that’s never been done, it’s truly special. Not just for our campus, coaching staff, but our entire athletic program as a whole.”

Gates is still deciding where to go to college, but she is definitely getting a scholarship. She still has time to choose as signing day is still a couple months away.
