Partnership Promotes Financial Literacy

In a new partnership, Fidelity Direct Mortgage will coordinate with Oakland Mills High School staff to identify internship opportunities and offer a series of financial literacy workshops for parents and students.

James Obasiolu Elected As Student Member of the Board

Atholton High School junior James Obasiolu was elected Student Member of the Board of Education for the 2024-2025 school year. His campaign focused on issues around promoting diversity, equity and inclusion; student mental health; and improved engagement with students.

Students Receive 2023 Spirit of Soccer Awards

Six HCPSS students were honored with 2023 Spirit of Soccer Awards by the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer. The awards are given to individuals who play soccer for allied programs, and who exhibit positive sportsmanship behaviors and leadership abilities while participating in the programs.

HCPSS Names 2024 Principal and Teachers of the Year

Congratulations to the recipients of the school system’s annual principal and teachers of the year award are: Principal of the Year Dr. Joelle Miller, Centennial HS; Teacher of the Year (Washington Post nominee) Jeanette Swank, Ellicott Mills MS; and Teacher of the Year (MSDE nominee) Jessica Nichols, River Hill HS.

Therapy Dogs Bring Joy to Cedar Lane

Throughout the school year, students and staff at the Cedar Lane School are visited by volunteers and dogs from Fidos for Freedom, enabling CLS students to practice communication, mobility, and social interaction skills and provide a source of joy to students, staff, and Fidos volunteers alike.

Students Explore Pollution

Fifth-graders at St. John’s Lane Elementary School investigated plastic bag pollution, conducting a survey to assess Howard County residents’ awareness and understanding of Howard County’s Disposable Bag Fee Program and sharing their findings with Howard County officials. Now they are working to collect recycled plastic film as part of a recycling challenge.
