Kenai Alternative High School
Principal's Corner with Kyle McFall
The month of April was full of awesome adventures, fun activities, and amazing student accomplishments. The KPBSD Art Show kicked off the month and Kenai Alternative was well represented. Our art teacher, Anna Widman, has built an exceptional program at KALT and this was demonstrated by the representation of KALT artwork. The following students not only had pieces displayed in the art show, but also were selected to receive an award:
- Andrea Duncan - honorable mention in the open category
- Lexi Koenig - 3rd place in painting
- Kage Poe - 3rd place in drawing
- Tanna DeCook - 2nd place and honorable mention in mixed media
- Hayes Howard - 2nd place in photography
- Jesse Markham - honorable mention in photography
Congrats to all of our award winners and students who had pieces in the art show! April also brought opportunities to focus on fun and adventure. Sources of Strength organized an egg painting activity, once again allowing students to showcase their creativity, and an egg hunt. Students had a blast searching for the 5 golden eggs, which had special prizes located inside. Staff and students also were able to participate in what many people consider to be the trip of a lifetime, a Kenai Fjords Tour through Resurrection Bay. We were extremely fortunate as it was perfect weather and we were able to view all sorts of different wildlife, including orcas and gray whales. The trip also served as a bonding experience for many of our students. All-in-all, it was an amazing experience.
Kenai Alternative also participated in KPBSD's annual student council conference. Seven of our students attended the conference, providing our student body with a voice in the district. Sonia Montague and Jaci Bettis gave our school report to an auditorium full of student council members from all over the KPBSD. We are proud of our students for taking an active leadership role and look forward to seeing this group continue to grow.
Finally, I want to give a few shout-outs to students who are participating in activities outside of school. Daivion Swain played basketball for Kenai Central and is now competing for the Kardinals' track team. Sonia Montague is playing soccer at Soldotna High School. Danielle Thies and Levin Hendrickson spent countless hours designing and producing Kenai Alternative's school hoodies in an afterschool graphics design academy. These students represent our school and community with pride and we are proud of their accomplishments.
It is hard to believe, but we have made it to May and all that comes with the final month of the school year. Seniors (and one of our juniors) are eagerly awaiting graduation and the culmination of their high school careers. We are also preparing for an amazing rafting trip on the Kenai River and the newly developed Career Prep Week. It will go fast, but the end of the 2022-23 school year will be a memorable one at Kenai Alternative.

Senior Spotlight - Lexi Koenig
Q. How has your experience at Kenai Alternative been?
Lexi: Amazing! This is my forever school. I've tried a lot of schools and this has been the best one.
Q. What advice would you give to incoming students?
Lexi: Be nice to Annette or I'll find you. Haha! Come in with your guard down. You don't need it here. Everyone is really nice and accommodating. But seriously, tell me if anyone is not nice to Annette.
Q. What are your future goals?
Lexi: I want to travel everywhere in the world. I want to have a bunch of jobs like event planning, art, take a bunch of college classes. But in the end, when it gets down to what I want to eventually do, I want to be a small scale architectural designer.
Q. Do you have any parting words for your classmates and teachers?
Lexi: You should have helped me on the senior tile! But seriously, you are the impact you have on the world, which is a lot more important than you realize.
We are proud of Lexi for all that she has accomplished (including the production of the senior tile) and look forward to seeing her take the next step in her journey!

Throughout the months of the promotion, we really emphasized the message - "do the little things and the big dreams will become a reality." The students who qualified for this trip took this message to heart and we are proud of them for their commitment to their education.
