Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging

Standard Citation Forms for Rare Materials Cataloging are references to bibliographies and catalogs (printed or electronic) used by rare book catalogers, dealers, collectors, and researchers that can be used to verify or identify a work or provide a detailed physical description. These citations are formatted in such a way as to make it easy to identify and locate a copy of a cited resource.

The two previous editions of Standard Citation Forms for Published Bibliographies and Catalogs Used in Rare Book Cataloging (SCF) had a narrower scope – printed works. The current edition has been expanded to include all formats typically found in special collections. The link above to Working Principles provides guidance on how to create a new citation.

Each entry includes the following information: Current citation form, Author, Title, Imprint, Extent, Notes, Contents, Subjects, OCLC Number, Earlier Citation Form, and Citation number. Note: Some of the forms of citation have changed significantly with this edition which is why the Earlier Citation Forms have been included.

If you want to update your catalog to reflect the new citation forms, please see the “Conversion Spreadsheet” link above for a list of old citation forms matched to their new versions.
