Emergency Medical Services

 

This program is designed to prepare students for a career in emergency medical services. Students successfully completing the first semester may apply for EMT-Basic certification. Students completing the second semester may apply for Advanced EMT certification. Students completing the final semesters may apply for Paramedic Certification. Students who successfully complete the technical and general education courses will earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Emergency Medical Services, which broadens and heightens the student’s career opportunity and portability.

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).

EMS Degrees and Certificates at Galveston College

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) – Emergency Medical Services
  • Certificate – Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
  • Certificate – Paramedic

Program Goal

To prepare competent entry-level Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains, with exit points at the EMT and Advanced EMT levels.

Program Outcomes

Provide care for the emergency patient in the pre-hospital setting.

  1. Work as a team with other EMS care providers in the pre-hospital setting.
  2. Use critical thinking and decision-making skills to determine the healthcare needs of the pre-hospital patient.
  3. Plan treatment to include prevention and initial care procedures to promote and maintain the healthcare needs in an emergency situation.
  4. Place the patient’s welfare, comfort, and privacy first when planning and implementing initial care.

This program is designed to prepare students for a career in emergency medical services. Students completing the Paramedic Certificate Program may apply for Paramedic Certification.

This program is designed to prepare students for a career in emergency medical services. Students completing this semester may apply for Advanced EMT (formerly Intermediate) certification.

Program Outcomes

1.  Provide care for the emergency patient in the pre-hospital setting.
2.  Work as a team with other EMS care providers in the pre-hospital setting.
3.  Use critical thinking and decision-making skills to determine the healthcare needs of the pre-hospital patient.
4.  Plan treatment to include prevention and initial care procedures to promote and maintain the healthcare needs in an emergency situation.
5.  Place the patient’s welfare, comfort, and privacy first when planning and implementing initial care.
 
Course Offerings
The AEMT course is offered over every Spring and Summer semesters.

The purpose of the Associates of Applied Science in EMS Alternative Degree Option is to prepare students for entry to management, education, or supervisory positions that will be expected to plan, direct, and coordinate EMS and Fire organizations. The courses in this will be delivered primarily via distance education. The program includes certifications in Critical Care, EMS Instructor, Supervision/Management, and EMS safety/Disaster Response. Students will be awarded 24 credit hours for their paramedic certification.

 

The EMS Alternative Degree Option is specifically for currently National or State of Texas Certified/Licensed Paramedic wanting to obtain their Associates Degree in EMS. Students that complete the EMS Professional Certificate and 15 hours of core elective credit are eligible for this degree.

Certification – Emergency Medical Technician
