Gerrits, PhD, is endowed professor Clinical Language, Speech and Hearing Sciences at Utrecht University, funded by the Dutch Association for Speech and Language Therapy. Her research programme focuses on the improvement of societal participation of people with speech and language disorders through innovation of speech and language therapy. Main topics of expertise are clinical linguistics, health sciences, qualitative and co-design research methods, citizen science,  research ethics, evidence-based practice, communicatieve participation, PROMs, family-centred care, patient perspective, speech and language therapy in children with language disorders, dyslexia, cochlear implantation.

There are three main topics of research:

  1. Prevention and language screening
  2. Efficacy of speech and language therapy for children and adults with speech and language disorders
  3. Innovation of speech and language therapy for children and adults with speech and language disorders

Besides her research activities Gerrits is leading the master program Clinical Health Sciences for Allied Health Professionals (Gezondheidswetenschappen voor Zorgprofessionals) at the faculty of Medicine. In addition to her work at Utrecht University Gerrits is chair of the research group Speech and Language Therapy at HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht.
