Portland police officials are asking for help finding a man suspected of fatally shooting another man outside of a Southeast Portland convenience store, as well as a woman suspected of assaulting the victim’s girlfriend.

Jonathan “Johnny” Polanco, 30, was shot and killed in a 7-Eleven parking lot at Southeast 92nd Avenue and Holgate Boulevard on Aug. 20. He was attempting to pull two women off of his girlfriend, KD Moline, when he was shot.

Police on Tuesday publicly identified Leonard Edwards, 18, as the man suspected of fatally shooting Polanco. Deshondra Rayford, 19, is suspected of assaulting Moline.

Edwards is wanted on allegations of second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon, and Rayford is wanted on suspicion of third-degree assault.

Officers interviewed a minor involved in the assault of Moline and shooting death of Polanco, officials said, but the minor is no longer of interest in the case.

A video of the fatal shooting and the fight that led up to it was posted to a popular Instagram page that’s no longer active.

The shaky footage shows two women attacking Moline outside of the convenience store. At one point, two men approach from the side and shout for them to stop. Then the video turns to show a different man walking toward the 7-Eleven while raising a handgun.

He aims the gun toward the skirmish and shoots, striking Polanco in the head. Polanco then falls to the ground, bleeding as the video ends.

“I refuse to let him go as a statistic,” Rob Polanco said of his brother during an August news conference. “He has a name. His name is Johnny Polanco. And I will scream it till the day that someone is put behind bars for it.”

Polanco is one of 73 people killed in homicides this year in Portland, according to an analysis by The Oregonian/OregonLive, which has chronicled the record-breaking wave of gun violence and death in its recent project, “Under the Gun.”

Officials asked anyone with information on the whereabouts of Edwards or Rayford to contact Detective Jennifer Hertzler (Jennifer.Hertzler@portlandoregon.gov; 503-823-1040) or Detective Joseph Corona (Joseph.Corona@portlandoregon.gov; 503-823-0508) and reference case No. 21-231670.
