A 43-year-old member of the Sûreté du Québec will be charged with manslaughter next month in connection with the death of a teenager in the Laurentians last year.

The Montreal police arrested the SQ officer, Éric Deslauriers, on Thursday following an independent investigation that was ordered by the provincial government into the death of a 17-year-old male who was fatally shot on Jan. 22, 2014, near a high school in Ste-Adèle. The victim was identified as David Lacour in media reports published shortly after the shooting.

Deslauriers was released following his arrest after agreeing to return to court at a future date, on March 10, at the courthouse in St-Jérôme. He will be charged with causing the death of the 17-year-old victim by intentionally discharging a firearm without taking into consideration his life or safety. The charge carries a maximum life sentence and a mandatory minimum four-year sentence upon conviction.

On the day of the shooting, the Montreal police said an SQ officer was investigating a report about a stolen car that had been spotted near École secondaire Augustin-Norbert Morin, a high school in Ste-Adèle. The Montreal police alleged at the time that when the SQ officer approached the car, the driver tried to run him over and, at one point, the officer “opened fire in his direction.”

On Thursday, the Montreal police directed all questions about the arrest to the provincial prosecutor’s bureau, the Directeur des poursuites criminelles et pénales. A spokesperson for the bureau confirmed that the charge was filed and provided the information about Deslauriers’s upcoming court date.
