PURPOSE AND APPLICATION

Academic programs at Drexel University are scheduled on both quarter and semester calendars as well as, in some cases, alternate calendars. In all cases, scheduling is guided by the Assignment of Credit Hours policy.

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education requires its members to adhere to the U.S. Department of Education definition of a “credit hour.” This definition is as follows:

Credit hour: Except as provided in 34 CFR 668.8(k) and (l)1, a credit hour is an amount of work represented in intended learning outcomes and verified by evidence of student achievement that is an institutionally established equivalency that reasonably approximates not less than:

  1. One hour of classroom or direct faculty instruction and a minimum of two hours of out of classroom student work each week for approximately fifteen weeks for one semester or trimester hour of credit, or ten to twelve weeks for one quarter hour of credit, or the equivalent amount of work over a different amount of time; or
  2. At least an equivalent amount of work as required in paragraph (1) of this definition for other academic activities as established by the institution including laboratory work, internships, practica, studio work, and other academic work leading to the award of credit hours.

STATEMENT OF POLICY

In accordance with federal guidelines set forth in the U.S. Department of Education definition of a “credit hour,” Drexel University defines one Credit Hour Unit (CHU) as approximately equivalent to a minimum of one scheduled hour2 of classroom instruction with a minimum of two hours of out-of-classroom study each week per credit hour over a Drexel calendar quarter or semester, or the equivalent for alternative term schedules3. This policy applies equally to courses of varying credits, duration, and modes of instruction4. Other venues for instruction (such as, but not limited to, experiential instruction, work in laboratories, work in studios, projects, seminars, or thesis/dissertation) provide appropriate credit hour equivalencies to classroom instruction, as specified in the attached table entitled Schedule Type - Credit Hour Equivalencies. In all cases, assignments (e.g., homework) and final assessments (e.g., final examinations and projects) are generally not considered as instructional time for purposes of calculating a CHU. Academic credit for cooperative education (defined below) is based on the student workload related to co-operative education learning outcomes and is equivalent to the academic workload of a full-time student.

This policy applies to all academic levels and all modes of instruction at Drexel University. Student learning outcomes for courses and academic programs are to be uniformly satisfied regardless of the mode of instruction.

Co-operative Education

The amount of work performed as set forth in the job description and in the anticipated learning outcomes is equivalent to the academic workload of a full-time student:

  • at least 32 hours per week of supervised work for paid co-ops
  • at least 20 hours per week of supervised work for unpaid co-ops

Periodic Review

As part of the approval process for new courses or course revisions, credit hours are reviewed by the Faculty Senate, the Office of the Provost, and the Office of the University Registrar. Periodic review of credit hours is further conducted annually by a University committee established by the Office of the Provost in conjunction with the Faculty Senate. In some cases, specialized accreditation and reaccreditation processes require program review of credit hours as well.
