Teacher as Researcher

Sometimes a large-scale experimental study is not the right tool for the job. When it comes to conducting experiments on the effectiveness of specific instructional strategies in classrooms, teachers are best positioned to find out what works. Marzano Research is taking action to rethink classroom research and empower teachers to test and adjust day-to-day instruction. Instructional strategies are a unique type of intervention because their effects are observable in a relatively short period of time. As such, they are perfect candidates for teacher experiments. We bring tools that support classroom-based experiments, helping teachers develop and test hypotheses about what works for their particular students and use results to inform real-time adjustments.

The Teacher as Researcher Fellowship

The Teacher as Researcher Fellowship is a professional learning and leadership program that provides educators with professional growth and leadership opportunities. Fellows deepen their understanding of how to conduct classroom-based experiments, increase their ability to consume and generate research and evidence, and circulate knowledge about what works.

Interested in getting started? Our Teacher as Researcher research design workshops kick-start the fellowship and are designed to support teachers in conducting research in their own classrooms. The workshops will cover the design and implementation of two Instructional Improvement Cycles, the selection of appropriate evidence-based instructional strategies for students, the collection of assessment data to test and evaluate instructional strategies, and the analysis and reflection of the results of the Instructional Improvement Cycles.
