Introduction

The Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office (PA SHPO) is a bureau of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) and the commonwealth’s official historic preservation agency. PA SHPO maintains Pennsylvania’s Historic Places Inventory which includes the Pennsylvania Above Ground Survey (PAGS) and the Pennsylvania Archaeological Site Survey (PASS).

PA SHPO is undertaking a three-year effort to collect baseline information about thousands of older and historic places across a vast part of Pennsylvania that are underrepresented in Pennsylvania’s statewide inventory. This type of survey effort has not been undertaken in four decades.

PA SHPO needs your help in identifying places and spaces Pennsylvanians value in their communities. Your input is important in making this effort successful, and we welcome your recommendations of places that should be documented. Your feedback will inform the list of historic resources to be surveyed in each county and municipality.

We are specifically looking for your input on the following types of places:
  • Older & historic places important to your community
  • African American churches & cemeteries
  • Underrepresented Communities
  • Places associated with themes like recreation, fraternal buildings, industry and more
For the purposes of this online survey, we have provided space to tell us about three places in each category. If you'd like to share more than three places, please email your list with the information requested to the survey project manager at CGimbal@jmt.com.
