THE PURPOSE OF THIS AWARD IS TO 
INSPIRE PUBLISHABLE RESEARCH THAT 
PROMOTES UPSTANDER ACTIONS FOR JUSTICE,
ON EITHER THE MICRO-LEVEL 
(i.e., EVERYDAY BULLYING, TEASING, OSTRACIZING) OR MACRO-LEVEL 
(i.e., STATE SPONSORED, SYSTEMIC)
BASED ON ARCHIVAL RESEARCH WITH 
THE LINDA STEIN ART EDUCATION COLLECTION IN THE EBERLY FAMILY
SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIBRARY 
AT THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY
AND THE LINDA STEIN ART ARCHIVES
AT SMITH COLLEGE.
 
Those who may apply include: 
Art Historians, Artists, Educators, Curators, Critics, 
Writers, Academics, Students and Scholars. 
 
 
 
 
 
To honor her late mother, Joyce, 
this endowment has been funded by Diane Froot 
to exist in perpetuity at Penn State University.

Linda Stein’s art and educational initiatives focus on social justice, and the dichotomies of Power/Vulnerability, Masculinities/Femininities, Warmaking/Peacemaking.
 
At this time of global inequity made clear by Covid, and with social protesting after the death of George Floyd, we know that if one of those bystander policemen were an upstander, Floyd would be alive today. And so many people of color and “others” would not be subjected to harassment and much worse.
 
What does it take to summon the courage to be an Upstander?
