PURPOSE/SUMMARY:

The purpose of this item is the finalize the contract terms for an initial offer of employment to the candidate selected as the Superintendent of Schools in the previous action item.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

The Board of Trustees previously selected The Bryan Group to facilitate the Superintendent search. The Bryan Group’s proprietary recruiting and screening process involves the utilization of stakeholders to facilitate the steps of the process which include identifying key leadership qualities and skills and interviewing for those competencies.

 

During the April 8, 2022, meeting of the Board of Trustees, The Bryan Group provided a presentation on the competencies that were used to evaluate applicants and identify the finalists and instructions on how to evaluate candidates for the identified competencies as a part of the interview process. Finally, The Bryan Group conducted one (1) hour interviews via Zoom with each candidate using their Guided Storytelling Interviewing methodology and Trustees had an opportunity to ask follow-up questions of the candidates.

 

The candidates also visited our District April 18-20, 2022, and participated in various activities that provided an opportunity for students, families, and employees to interact with the candidates and provide feedback for the Board’s consideration. Finally, in-person follow up interviews were conducted by the Trustees during the candidate’s visits to our District.

 

On April 26, 2022, the totality of information available regarding candidates will be utilized for discussion and deliberation to select a Superintendent of Schools. This item will contemplate the contract terms to be offered to the selected candidate.

Related Action: The Board of Trustees recommended The Bryan Group utilizes a search advisory group; empowered The Bryan Group to form an advisory group as they see fit; and set the compensation range as: base salary of $275,000-$310,000 plus benefits and incentives.

BOARD POLICY:

Board Policy 9050 – Board of Trustees Governing Mission

Board Policy 9080 – Hiring and Monitoring Superintendent Performance

 

LEGAL:  Nevada Revised Statutes 241 and NRS 391 guide the legal processes the Board must follow in the selection and appointment of a Superintendent.

 

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT:   The Board of Trustees welcomes input from staff, students, families, community members, and other stakeholders in public education in Washoe County regarding the process for selection of a Superintendent of Schools. After all public comment has been received by the Board pertaining to this agenda item, the Board of Trustees may take action and vote on an appropriate motion, regarding one or more elements of the process.

RECOMMENDATION: That the Board of Trustees approves the addition of language regarding mediation proceedings and makes determinations regarding the outstanding contract terms to be included in the initial employment offer for the candidate selected as Superintendent of Schools for the Washoe County School District.
