OVERVIEW: A recommendation is being submitted to the Board to close schools on Monday, May 2, 2022, for a Professional Learning Day and open schools on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. This change would allow the Professional Learning Day to be in alignment with Eid al-Fitr, which is observed on May 2, 2022. The current approved 2021-2022 calendar has Eid al-Fitr being observed on May 3, 2022, which is incorrect. The dates for Eid al-Fitr are accurate in the approved 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic calendars.

Moving forward, in addition to ensuring a representative from the Muslim community continues to participate on the HCPSS Academic Calendar Committee, staff will utilize the Islamic calendar adopted by the Fiqh Council of North America, which is widely accepted by local and national Muslim organizations. This will allow the academic calendar committee to identify Muslim dates of observance with greater accuracy.

RECOMMENDATION/FUTURE DIRECTION:
Approve the proposed modification to the 2021-2022 Academic Calendar.
