PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Bonny Slope Community,
Our Spring Break is nearly here, and with it brings changes to our school in a somewhat rapid pace!
This week is our first week in “optional masking” mode for our building. On average, about half of our students have maintained their masks this week. Each classroom teacher spoke with their students about how to show kindness to those who are choosing to wear masks and those that are choosing not to wear masks. A masked student I spoke with yesterday told me he’s choosing to wear his mask because both of his parents are in the medical field and he wanted them to be safe at work.
Because of the new guidance issued by the state and our district, we are happy to announce that starting after Spring Break, our students will be moving back into the cafeteria for lunch. We are able to accommodate students with the distance requirements and the tables that we have. This also means that students will no longer need to bring towels to sit on! Please keep in mind our lunch times are not changing, and we expect students to be more social at lunch again. If your student is not eating their full lunch, you may want to speak to them about how much they are talking with their friends.
Volunteering is also returning, and we are delighted to start seeing parents back in our building! Please remember volunteers are required to have proof of the COVID vaccine uploaded prior to working in the building. Your card should up uploaded to your “myimpact” page, and it may take a week to be approved from the district, so keep that in mind. When you arrive, you’ll need to sign in on the computer in the office. Additionally, please coordinate your volunteering either with the classroom coordinator assigned to your student’s classroom, or consult the teacher. More detailed directions about volunteering can be found on our district’s Covid FAQ page.
We also wanted to welcome our new superintendent Dr. Gustavo Balderas, who will be replacing retiring superintendent Don Grotting on July 1st. Dr. Balderas got his start in Hillsboro School District. In fact, our counselor Tiffany Rogers worked for him there. We look forward to his leadership in the coming years.
We hope this coming Spring Break is a restful and enjoyable one for all of our families. We look forward to seeing everyone back on March 28th!
Janet Maza and Jim Hiller

NUTRITION SERVICES
We continue to face significant supply chain issues with our food purveyors and partners.
It remains our core mission to provide healthy meals that fuel student's academic success and growth. We appreciate that children may not be offered what is on the menu and we apologize.
However, we will persevere and provide nutritious free meals to all students, including a vegetarian option, at every school meal. Thank you in advance for your understanding and helping children navigate this unprecedented situation.

BOBCAT TRAIL CLUB IS BACK!
We are very excited to announce that the Bobcat Trail Club will be coming back to Bonny Slope on Monday 3/28! Mark your calendars now so you don’t forget about it during Spring Break.
And because the last Bobcat trail club was in February of 2020, we thought we’d give you a refresher on what exactly this awesome program is.
What is Bobcat Trail club?
The Bobcat Trail Club is a running/walking program for Bonny Slope Elementary students. The goal of the Bobcat Trail Club is to encourage fitness in a fun way! Kids will run/walk laps on the track and accumulate the laps completed. Rewards will be given after designated milestones are reached. New this year is the fact that Bobcat trail kids will be leveraging our Marathon Kids partnership to help track miles vs the old pen and paper system.
WHEN DO I RUN/WALK?
Kids can run/walk during before school on Mondays and Fridays. We’ll kick off on Monday, March 28th 8:00 am. The program will (hopefully) run through June 2022.
HOW DO I SIGN UP?
All kids are automatically signed up through the Marathon Kids programs managed by the P.E. Department and kids and can participate as they wish. When they arrive to run, they will find cards, separated by classroom, with their names on it. Grab your card and start running! Once you start running on Monday or Friday, you have started the journey to the marathon distance.
HOW DO I TRACK MY LAPS RAN/WALKED?
Each child will be given a card with a QR code on it. As laps are completed, volunteers will scan the code to keep track of each child’s distance. NOTE – the QR codes are a new process this year so if you child was a previous runner it may be slightly different to them than years past.
Milestones (6 laps around the track equals 1 mile)
• 1 card filled = 6.55 Miles
• 2 cards filled = 13.1 Miles (Half Marathon)
• 3 cards filled = 19.65 Miles
• 4 cards filled = 26.20 Miles (Marathon)
AWARDS
Awards presented for running specific distances include bracelets, pencils, erasers, stickers, t-shirts, keychains, a medal and lots of recognition!
WHAT IF THERE IS BAD WEATHER?
The Bobcat Trail Club will attempt to happen most days. We’ve learned our Bonny Slope kids are resilient so unless it is a downpour we will be out there.
WILL MY CHILD HAVE TO WEAR A MASK WHEN RUNNING?
No, masks are optional.
CAN PARENTS VOLUNTEER TO COUNT LAPS?
YES! And we need volunteers to help make this happen for our kids. We need parents to use school IPads to scan the QR codes on the lap cards. Time commitment would be Monday and/or Fridays from 8-8:20. Please sign up here on the sign up genius if you are ready to commit. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050848A9AB23A3F58-bobcat

BSE Pantry Needs You!
Every week, the BSE Pantry sends home backpacks of food for some of the families in our school community. We need help packing the backpacks on a weekly basis. This task is very time-flexible -- backpacks can be packed anytime on late Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. (Note that sometimes the backpacks don't make it back to school on Monday. For that reason, we ask that you not sign up if Monday is your only day of availability.)
If you are available to help pack, please sign up on the Sign-Up Genius for a week and designate when you'll plan to come in to school. The weekend before your shift, you will receive an email with instructions on where to go, what to pack, and what to do with the filled backpacks. If there are two people packing, it can be done in under an hour.
Please remember that in order to volunteer inside Bonny Slope, you must have created a MyImpact Page, passed a background check and uploaded proof of your COVID vaccination.
Thank you so much for considering!

March Safe Routes to School
Spring’s Steps to Bicycle Safety
With more people itching to get outside to walk and bike, it’s a good time to review the rules to ensure everyone’s safety. Be sure to review the best routes to use and if biking, check the bike’s condition before you head out. This short video, “ABC Quick Check” can help!
Here are a few steps to remember:
● Always wear your helmet
● Ride in the same direction as traffic, not against traffic.
● Be visible. Wear a bright jacket or add
reflective material or blinking lights to increase visibility.
● Stay alert and ride predictably, in a straight line.
● If riding on the sidewalk or in a crosswalk, ride at walking speed and be prepared to walk your bike when it gets busy or at the request of crossing guards. Be always mindful of pedestrians and aware of traffic.
● Don’t assume that drivers see you – always watch for cars making turns or backing out of driveways. Learn bicycle safety skills in a class or ask Safe Routes to School to give a lesson at your school!

PreK Interest Forms are Now Being Accepted!
Bonny Slope is an inquiry-based learning school that welcomes the opportunity to have a PreK in our school! We believe that children learn best through playful learning. It is this type of learning that supports our students with problem-solving and life-related skills, known as Habits of Mind. It is the focus on these skills such as persisting, listening, and understanding with empathy, thinking and communicating with clarity, taking responsible risks, creating, imagining, and innovating that is needed to be successful in kindergarten and ultimately throughout their educational experience.
Priority is given to students who qualify for free preschool based on a family's income level at or below the Federal Poverty Guidelines as well as other qualifying questions on our Interest Form.
Any spots that are not filled by September 9th will be open to families who pay tuition based on our waitlist of submitted Interest Forms. Please fill out an Interest Form to start the process for PreK for 2022-2023.
