PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Bonny Slope Community Members,
We find ourselves at the end of a very busy October! With our infamous Monster Mash happening all this week, and finishing our Parent-Teacher Conferences last week, our calendar has been eventful for everyone around. These two time-honored traditions lead us to feel like our school year is resembling more of what it was like before our pandemic, albeit with the necessary safety adjustments.
As former classroom teachers, we always found Parent-Teacher Conference time to be an incredibly energizing time for us. Connecting with our families, even for a short amount of time, allowed us to establish goals for the year, comment on progress made so far, and build bridges towards each other to ensure success. We know one factor that always ensures student success is when the family and the teacher work in concert together. Thanks to all of you for your participation last week.
Your follow through after the conference is also incredibly important. Students should know what was discussed, and any goals they should be working on. This supports the efforts of our hard-working staff to maintain the momentum gained after touching base. Again, this confirms our belief that we are partners together in your student’s education.
We are also happy that the famed “Monster Mash” is happening all this week. Our BSCO team worked hard planning writing contests to scavenger hunts to a walkable treat trail in our neighborhood. The popular staff pumpkin carving contest is on again, with several creative staff members submitting their entries. Thanks to the Monster Mash planning team for working with our guidelines to make an enjoyable week of Halloween fun for all. Please visit the BSCO website for specific details about the Monster Mash: https://www.bonnyslopebsco.org
Please note: Because we are having the Monster Mash celebration after school, we are asking that students NOT wear their costumes to school on Friday. Thank you for your help in reminding your students about this.
Speaking of the Monster Mash, rumor has it that PIRATES have been spotted all around Bonny Slope. Look below for a link to a video that shows these rascally people doing their pirate things.
We are also nearing the start of our COVID testing for our students. Please find below important information about the testing procedures. We have nearly 400 of our students participating in this, which is amazing! One thing to remember is that our collection date for samples is on a Monday. If you forget to collect a sample on a Monday, we cannot take a sample on any other day, so you’ll just wait until the following Monday.
We hope that you are finding joy and comfort in our rainy fall days.
Janet Maza and Jim Hiller

Halloween Surprise for the BSE Community
When the Bonny Slope staff gathered together at the end of August, we realized that this was the first time we were all together in the same room in a year and a half. It was quite the moment for everyone. Just as we focused on care and connection with the students at the start of the school year, we also needed to focus on care and connection with our staff. But what to do? We needed a fun, engaging activity.
We then remembered that last year, Mrs. Maza found a video online that had some potential. In it a family, who was missing going to Disneyland, recreated the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride in their home. This short video was fun to watch (and probably can still be found on You Tube). We realized immediately how much fun it would be to ask our wonderfully creative staff to do the same thing. It also fit in with our theme for school this year, “Bringing Back the Magic”.
So during our first meeting in August, we challenged the staff to recreate the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Each grade level took a section, and reenacted it. We felt Halloween was the most appropriate time to share it (although if you attended our first BSCO meeting in September, you saw it then!)
From all of us at Bonny Slope, to all of you, we hope you enjoy our ride!

OHSU COVID Testing
If you signed up for the K-12 COVID-19 screening program thru OHSU, your student will receive a test kit, labels for their sample and directions for the test soon. Test kits will be delivered on Fridays (or Thursday if Friday is not a school day) and returned the following Monday. We hope to start the test kit distribution on Friday, October 29th, however we are waiting on one additional piece from OHSU to have clearance to begin. If you do not receive a test kit 10/29 we will plan to send home kits on Friday, November 5th. Please refer to the calendar in ParentSquare or on our website for collection dates.
Students will deposit their COMPLETED test kits (samples need to be collected at home - there is not an option to collect samples at school) in the box provided at each entrance when they arrive at school on Monday.
OHSU will pick up all samples on Mondays for processing. Parents will receive an email 1-2 days later with the test results. Attached you will find the testing directions (same as what will be sent home on Friday)
