🚧 Understanding the barriers students face on the transfer pathway is key to improving transfer outcomes. Successful transfer from #comm_college to a four-year university has the potential to improve access, completion, and racial equity gains in #highered. Aisha N. Lowe, Ph.D. explores California's strides in overcoming these hurdles in a new blog in Inside Higher Ed: https://lnkd.in/e_uqmRhZ Community College Research Center

Our #TrackingTransfer reports find that while nearly 80 percent of first-time #comm_college students have the intention of completing a bachelor’s degree, only 16 percent manage to do so within six years. The percentages are even lower for more vulnerable students, including low-income, Black, Hispanic and older students. Reflecting on this year's National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) conference, Eileen Strempel and Stephen J. Handel are out with an op-ed in Inside Higher Ed discussing the lack of progress in transfer student success: https://lnkd.in/e-NhT3z3 Community College Research Center National Student Clearinghouse

Congratulations to our Kimberly Lowry, Ph.D. on being recognized as a 2024 Pillar of the Profession by NASPA - Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education! 🎉
Excited to share that I have been recognized as a 2024 Pillar of the Profession by NASPA! As a first-generation community college graduate, I entered the Student Affairs/Higher Education field 20 years ago with a passion for helping students who were historically underserved, like myself. I've learned many lessons, failed and got back up, and met so many incredible people who have forever been etched in my heart. This award is not just a recognition of my hard work, but a representation of my family and friends who have loved and supported me through the years. I stand on the shoulders of those who paved the way and prayed for me, and remain committed to doing the same for so many others. Thank you NASPA for this incredible honor!

A small handful of super selective US colleges grab all the headlines. Meanwhile, low-cost, diverse #comm_colleges are quietly educating 40 percent of undergrads. It is at these open-access institutions that we have the best shot of advancing economic mobility and developing the diverse talent our country needs. But they’re facing huge challenges: dropping enrollments, pandemic learning loss, and diminishing public trust. 🎥 Didn't get a chance to attend our session, Promise & Peril: The Potential of Our Community Colleges, at #SXSWEDU? Check out the event stream to learn how excellent colleges are tackling these problems to change students’ lives and revitalize their communities: https://lnkd.in/e7S_7EvW Pascale Charlot, Joshua Wyner, and Russell Lowery-Hart

Educational gaps fuel income inequality among racial/ethnic groups, with adults from historically marginalized communities earning less than their white counterparts despite similar education levels, likely due to occupational segregation and wage discrimination. Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce finds in their new report that the US misses out on substantial lifetime earnings gains and social benefits due to educational attainment and earnings gaps. 📉 Access the full report: https://lnkd.in/eaf7WqqK
